Slap with a wet bus ticket for severe neglectcase
SPCA Auckland Executive Director BobKerridge is bitterly disappointed that a Glendene man whoseverely neglected his boxer dog has not been fined or madeto do community service.
Junior York, 27, pleaded guiltyto “failing to provide … proper and sufficient food”for his dog and was sentenced by Judge Ryan in the WaitakereDistrict Court on 16 February to two years disqualificationfrom owning dogs and reparations of$491.12.
“Considering the serious neglect involved inthis case, I am shocked and disappointed that the judge didnot hand down a more severe penalty,” says Kerridge. “Iwould have at least expected a longer period ofdisqualification at least. This is tantamount to a slap witha wet bus ticket.
“With the recent increases inpenalties under the Animal Welfare Act, I was hoping thatjudges might begin to hand down sentences to match some ofthe horrendous crimes inflicted on innocent animals, butthis insipid judgment for this badly neglected dog doeslittle to inspire confidence that this will occur.”
Thedog in question – a black, female, crossbred boxer – wasdiscovered on 13 July 2011 at a Harmel Road property inGeldene by an SPCA Inspector acting on a tip-off from thepublic.
